Preserving scarce resources aim of The Resort’s World Food Day activity

In a bid to tap into the innate curiosity of kids, The Resort, Madh-Marve’s six-month long sustainable agriculture initiative will culminate into World Food Day (which will be observed on October 16, 2019). The result-oriented activity, whose theme is It’s Our Turn To Lead, kicked off on World Earth Day, and will empower the 25 participants, who were aged between six and 15, to think about preserving the diminishing resources of the Earth and act as model champions of the environment.

The kids reconnected and interacted with nature through an array of practical and fun-filled activities under the guidance of environmental expert Hemand Dhavade, who has over a decade of experience in the field of horticulture. They will now be able to see their efforts (viz., growing vegetables, such as cucumbers, lady’s fingers, tomatoes and pumpkins, on a designated patch in the property’s backyard) come to fruition.

With the population of the world burgeoning, future generations are at a grave risk of inheriting a world where it may be too late to think of sustainable growth and development. In fact, many spaces have become devoid of nature, and children are spending most of their time indoors. This hinders their natural connection to nature’s rhythms. Now is the time for both the current and the next generation to understand the importance of preserving the planet, with a little contribution from each one.

Food prices are skyrocketing and availability is becoming scarce. Hence, it is our endeavour that at least a few future citizens can look ahead with hope and say, “Give me but a patch of ground and a little water and I will feed the Earth.”

“We wanted to engage with young children who will be our future,” said Satyajit Kotwal, general manager, The Resort, Mumbai. He added, “Teaching gardening skills to kids can have many benefits and it is a great learning activity. It will help them gain confidence as they learn new skills. We are glad Dhavade, who has so much experience in the field, could guide the children.”

The kids will come and harvest their vegetables on World Food Day. As a special bonanza, they will be taught tasty recipes with those vegetables by our master chef and, at the same time, will learn the basic elements of home science.

“We also hope to inculcate in them a sense of pride in becoming self-sufficient,” stated Kotwal, adding, “They will take ownership of the responsibility placed on them and will slowly get weaned away from dependence on outside help.”

World Food Day, which aims to heighten public awareness about the problem of hunger in the world, marks the date when the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations was launched in 1945.
